Softball Takes Middle Game of Three on Opening Day of TOC

TURLOCK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills rebounded with a 3-1 win over Chaminade University after dropping a 5-3 decision to 6th-ranked Western Washington, before falling to Dixie State 4-0 in its final game on day one of the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.  Freshman Melissa Pacheco belted her first collegiate home run of the year in the opening game loss.

The Toros strung together three hits in the first inning against Chaminade, with Pacheco cashing in pinch-runner Chelsea Miller with the game's first run.  Two hits equaled another run in the 5th with Jessica Hall bringing home the tally to make it 2-0 CSUDH, before CUH cut the lead in half with a single run in the 6th.

CSUDH, however, added an insurance run in their 6th inning at bat on a Silversword error, accounting for the final tally.

Lauren Harper earned the win after 5.0 innings of work, allowing 3 hits without a run scored, with Stephanie Jimenez picking up the save after tossing the final 2 innings.

Against the Vikings in the opener, the game remained scoreless through two until Jessica Amador scored on a WWU throwing error after leading off the frame with a single through the left side.

The Vikings, however, used 4 hits and a Toro error to score 5 in their third inning trip the plate, and not even Pacheco's first long ball of her college career with one aboard in the 6th was enough to overcome the deficit.

Toro starter Jimenez was saddled with the loss after tossing 3.0 innings and allowing 3 earned, with Amador notching two of the three hits in the morning's contest.

In CSUDH's final contest of the day against Dixie State, the Red Storm limited the Toros to just three hits in its 4-0 win as Harper took the loss after 4.1 innings of work.

The Toros, who moved to 18-15 after the first day of play, will resume the TOC with two games tomorrow, battling Notre Dame de Namur at 6:30 pm, followed by a showdown against Central Washington at 8:15 pm.
