Softball Stymied by Otters in 8-0, 3-2 Sweep

SEASIDE -- Cal State Dominguez Hills saw its modest four-game win streak come to a screeching halt in an 8-0 five-inning, mercy-run rule loss at host Cal State Monterey Bay in the opening game of today's double-header, before the hosts staged a come-from-behind 3-2 win in the nightcap to sweep the twinbill.

Sluggers Emiley McEwen and Krista Gould each went deep in the nightcap after CSUDH was limited to just two hits in the opener, with freshmen Brittany Brenner (pictured) and Veronica Vazquez tallying the two hits in the loss.

In game two, Gould broke up a scoreless game with a leadoff homer to dead center for her third blast of the season.  That looked to be enough for CSUDH starter Stephanie Jimenez, who scattered four hits over the first five innings.

In the sixth, however, the hosts answered with their own leadoff home run off the bat of Shea Olds, knotting the contest at 1-1.

CSUMB looked to keep momentum on their side in the top of the 7th by retiring the first two batters of the inning, but reigning CCAA MVP McEwen broke the deadlock with a two-out blast to center for a 2-1 lead.

That edge, however, was short-lived as a leadoff double and error to start the Otter 7th inning set the stage for one final rally, which produced two runs in the comeback win.

McEwen led the Toros with two hits as Jimenez took the hard-luck loss after tossing 6.1 innings and fanning nine against just one free pass.

The opener was all CSUMB as the Otters scored a run in the first, 4 in the third and 3 in the fifth to put the game away early.  Jamie Moon collected 3 hits, while Angelia Orozco and Diane Ortiz chipped in two each in the blowout.

The Toros, now 11-7, 7-7 CCAA, hook up again with CSUMB tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11:00 am on Otter Field.
