CS San Bernardino Completes Non-Conference Sweep of Toros

SAN BERNARDINO -- Host Cal State San Bernardino utilized stellar pitching and timely hitting in taking 8-2 and 11-3 (6) decisions over the Toros this afternoon on Coyote Field, completing the four-game non-conference series sweep over the Toros.  Freshman Veronica Vazquez belted her first home run as a Toro.

With the wins, the Coyotes took seven wins in eight meetings between the two teams after taking three of four CCAA games earlier this year in Carson.

The Toros tied the opener at 1-1 in the second inning thanks to Vazquez's deep shot, only to have the hosts take the lead with a run in the second before putting the game away in the third with four runs, the big blow coming on a Priscilla Curiel 3-run jack to left field.

Another Yote homer, this time by Courtney Wilhelms in the fourth, took care of the scoring after CSUDH scored a single run in its fourth inning on a CSUSB error, en route to the 8-2 final.

Stephanie Jimenez finished with two hits to lead the Toro offense, while starter Lauren Harper lasted just two innings in suffering the loss.

The nightcap looked to be a pitchers' duel as neither team was able to put across any runs through four innings of play.

Spotting CSUSB a run in the bottom of the fifth, CSUDH answered with three in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and Jackie Reyes blast over the left field fence for a 3-1 lead.

The Yotes, however, erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the 6th, with Wilhems belting a 3-run home run, and Holtzclaw and Flores pairing up for 2RBI hits each to end the contest due to the mercy run rule.

Reyes led the CSUDH offense with a 3-for-3 effort, while Jimenez took the loss after cruising through the first five.

The Toros, who fell to 17-13, resume league play next weekend against Humboldt State in Arcata.
