Yotes Take Non-Conference Twinbill From Toros

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills suffered 4-3 and 6-4 non-conference losses to CS San Bernardino this afternoon, dropping its record to 17-11 on the season.  Reigning CCAA MVP Emiley McEwen belted her eighth home run as part of her afternoon.

This marks the fifth time the Coyotes have bested the Toros this year after taking three of four CCAA league games earlier this year in Carson.

After spotting the Yotes a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the opener, McEwen brought momentum back to the Cardinal and Gold after belting her eighth home run of the year to dead center, bringing home Khryssi Steele, who doubled to lead off the frame.

That momentum didn't last long, however, as Jacquelyn Holtzclaw tied the game with one swing of her bat in CSUSB's bottom of the frame.

That's where the score remained until a Veronica Vazquez RBI single put CSUDH ahead 3-2 in the fifth, only to have the Yotes score twice in their sixth inning at-bat to take the lead for good, where reliever Cassidy Lee held the Toros scoreless in the seventh for the win, escaping a two-on, no-out rally.

CSUSB took a 3-0 lead in the nightcap, only to have the Toros roar back with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth frames, with both 4th-inning runs courtesy of sacrifice flies, and a Jessica Hall RBI single in the next frame.

The Coyotes tied the game in their fifth inning at-bat, before Yote Alex Mitchell belted a walk-off 2-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to complete the sweep.

Toro hurler Stephanie Jimenez was saddled with both losses in relief, with Hall, Steele and Krista Gould each tallying 3 hits, with Hall and McEwen notching multi-RBI contests.

The two teams continue their non-conference series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of game one set for 1:00 pm on Coyote Field.
