Softball Sweeps Pair From 10th-Ranked UC San Diego

CARSON -- Pitching took center stage today as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept visiting and 10th-ranked UC San Diego by 2-0 and 2-1 finals this afternoon on Toro Diamond.  Sophomore Stephanie Jimenez logged both a win and a save to highlight today's sweep.

With the wins, CSUDH improves to 16-8, 10-8 CCAA, while UCSD falls to 19-5, 13-5 CCAA.

The opener set the tone for the day early as the first 15 batters to step to the plate were retired in order, before the Toros put two runners on in the third but stranded them to keep the game scoreless.

The Tritons looked to earn the game's first run in the 5th inning as they had runners at the corners with one out, but a fielder's choice to third base resulted in an out at home plate courtesy of a perfect throw by 3B Jessica Hall, before left fielder Veronica Vasquez ran down a sinking line drive to keep the game scoreless.

That all changed in CSUDH's bottom half of the 5th, when a Triton error put Vasquez on to lead off the frame.  After a sacrifice moved her over, Khryssi Steele smacked an RBI single off the second baseman's glove for the unearned run.

CSUDH added an insurance run an inning later as another UCSD error put a Toro on the bases, where Jimenez cashed it in with an RBI single to right.

Toro starter Lauren Harper worked five innings for the win, fanning 5 against no walks, while Jimenez tossing the final two innings to pick up her third save of the year.

UCSD starter Camille Gaito, meanwhile, picked up her first loss of the year after allowing just 3 hits and a pair of unearned runs.

The hosts took an early 2-0 lead over the Tritons in the nightcap, putting together three hits and benefiting from two more UCSD miscues.

The Tritons, however, looked to get back into the game in their next at-bat after putting two runners on, but Jimenez came in in relief of starter Harper to induce a pop up and keep UCSD off the board.

That's where the score remained until the 6th when Nicole Spangler stroked a two-out single to second base to score Mya Romero, who earned her own infield single with one out in the frame.

Jimenez settled down after UCSD scored its first run of the afternoon as she retired the side in order in the 7th, notching her ninth win of the year.

Krista Gould led the Toro offense with two hits in the nightcap, and scored one of the two runs.

The two teams hook up again for the final two games of the regular season tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of game one set for 12 noon on Toro Diamond.
