Toros Win 2-1 Marathon Season Opener Over CSM Before Traditional 5-2 Victory in Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- In a pair of games that saw the reigning CCAA Player of the Year go 2-for-9, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team relied on a pair of great arms to lead them to a sweep of visiting Colorado School of Mines.  The first game was a 13-inning marathon with 21 runners stranded, only to end with the help of two Oredigger miscues by a 2-1 final in the opener, before a 5-run fifth inning paved the way for the 5-2 victory in the nightcap.   Sophomore Daisy Beltran had four hits, a run and two huge RBIs on the day.

To begin the season, both squads played no-hit softball through the first three innings before CSM scored in the top of the fourth on a leadoff triple followed by a double. CSUDH could not mount a charge until their last at-bat in regulation as they were being no-hit through the first six innings.

Sophomore Stephanie Jimenez would break-up the no-hitter with a double down the right field line to start the bottom of the seventh. After a sacrifice moved the runner to third, Beltran knocked in Jimenez on a single to the right side. Colorado would allow the Toros to get runners on first and second with no outs before wiggling out of the jam.

Both squads would get base runners over the next five innings but were not able to cash in the winning run until the bottom of the 13th. After a leadoff single by junior Emiley McEwen, freshman Elizabeth Jimenez was summoned in to pinch run, and was advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a CSM error, eventually coming home on Beltran's screamer up the middle for the thrilling 2-1 win.

The second game was a close battle for the first four and a half innings until the Toros bats got firing. CSUDH would lead the inning off with three straight singles and then score two on an error on a throw to third.  With two outs and the bases loaded, McEwen sent a blast over the right fielder's head to clear the bases to stake CSUDH to a 5-0 lead.  CSM would score two in the top of the sixth but could not bridge the full gap, falling by a 5-2 final.

For the afternoon, both of the one-two arms, S. Jimenez and both game starter Lauren Harper, would throw 10 innings with neither allowing more than two earned runs. Harper's line would be six hits, 13 strikeouts compared to Jimenez's nine hits and eight strikeouts. When all was said and done, Jimenez would notch a win and a save.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will return to action tomorrow afternoon as Notre Dame de Namur visits Carson for a 12 noon first pitch.
