No. 8 Toros Rebound With Huge 78-65 Win at CS San Bernardino

Box Score
CARSON -- Eighth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills rebounded with a huge effort at perennial power Cal State San Bernardino after suffering its first loss in 11 games last Saturday at CS Stanislaus, and the result was a convincing 78-65 win that not only kept the Toros tied with No. 14-ranked Humboldt State atop the CCAA standings, but one that avenged an earlier season home defeat to CSUSB and sent the Coyotes to their third-straight loss as well.

Senior Tim McLaurin led all scorers with 17 points in the decisive win as five Toros scored in double figures and the Toros shot 50.8% from the floor, and 47.4% from 3-point land.

The Toros seized control of the contest with just under five minutes elapsed in the opening session, taking an 11-10 lead on a McLaurin bucket at the 15:39 mark.

After McLaurin's score, CSUDH went on an 18-7 run over the next 10 minutes, capped by a Marcquintice Davis triple that brought the Toro lead to 29-17 with under six minutes left in the half before entering the locker room sporting a 40-31 lead with the big bucket coming via a Brian Gee 3-pointer with 34 ticks before the break.

CSUDH continued its hot shooting after intermission, ballooning its advantage to as many as 17 on two occasions early, the last on a James Cawthorne jumper at 13:58 that gave the Toros a 57-40 lead, before enjoying its largest advantage at 74-54 on a Michael Cox lay-up with six and a half minutes left in the contest, all but sealing the contest.

The Yotes mounted a rally in front of their announced crowd of 757 that cut the lead just 13, but that was as close as CSUSB would get in the 78-65 win.

The Toros emerged victorious in nearly all categories, with Davis just one board away from a double-double after adding 15 points.  Cawthorne finished with 14 points, Robert Willhite with 12 and Cox with 12 as CSUDH out-rebounded the Coyotes 40-31 in the win.

CSUDH, now 17-2, 13-2 CCAA, look to complete the weekend road sweep tomorrow night at defending NCAA National Champion Cal Poly Pomona, which downed Cal State L.A. 64-48 earlier tonight.
