Softball Sweeps Regular Season Series From SFSU After 3-1 and 7-3 Wins

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills used its triple-threat of slugger Emiley McEwen and pitching duo Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez (pictured) to take a come-from-behind 3-1 win over host San Francisco State in this morning's opener, before a 7-3 victory gave the visitors a four-game sweep of the Gators.

These wins give the Toros their first league sweep of the year as CSUDH improves to 11-5, 7-5 CCAA.  SFSU, meanwhile, drops to 3-14, 1-11 CCAA.

After spotting the hosts an unearned run in the bottom of their first inning in the opener, it took four innings until CSUDH took the lead for good.

In the top of the fifth, reigning CCAA MVP Emiley McEwen hit her second bomb in as many days, turning on a 2-1 offering from SFSU starter Ashley Jackson to tie the contest before consecutive walks and an RBI single by Veronica Vazquez brought in the second run of the frame.

The Toros added an insurance run an inning later as Krissi Sylvis led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Chelsea Miller groundout.

Harper and Jimenez did the rest, combining for a five-hitter while the Gators strangded five runners to CSUDH's 10.

Sylvis led the offensive charge with 2 of the Toros' 6 hits, while Summer Powell matched Sylvis' output with 2 hits of her own in SFSU's loss.

The nightcap was scoreless until the Toros erupted for 5 runs in the 3rd inning on 5 hits, the big blow coming on a Brittany Brenner two-run blast off SFSU starter Jordan Stanaland on the first pitch she saw.

SFSU closed the gap after plating two in their 5th inning at-bat and a single run an inning later, but the Toros sealed the deal in their final trip to the plate as Melissa Pacheco roped a full-count offering into the left-center field gap to bring home two.

That was more than enough for Toro starter Jimenez, who grew stronger as the game progressed en route to retiring the side in 3 of her final 4 innings of work to pick up her 7th win of the year.

McEwen and Pacheco led the hit parade in the nightcap with three each, while Pacheco's 3 RBI and Brenner's 2 accounted for 5 of the team's game two output.

The Toros continue their league schedule on the road next week in Seaside to face defending CCAA Champion Cal State Monterey Bay for a four-game set.
