Different Paths Lead to Same Result in CSUDH Sweep Over SFSU

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills exploded for its biggest offensive inning this season with eight runs in the 6th inning in the opener, and rode a 2-hit pitching masterpiece in the nightcap that proved the difference in the Toros' 8-2 and 3-0 sweep at San Francisco State.  Reigning CCAA MVP Emiley McEwen put the nail in the proverbial coffin with a grand slam to center in the opener, her fourth home run of the year.

The win snapped a two-game skid and brought CSUDH's record to one game under .500 in league play.

Save for a single run in the third inning for the hosts on a Kendra Wood RBI single, the opener was a pitcher's duel between Toro starter Lauren Harper and SFSU's Ashley Jackson.

The game remained 1-0 San Francisco State until the sixth inning, when the Toros erupted offensively to put the game away.

Consecutive walks on eight pitches set the wheels in motion as Brittany Brenner knotted the score with a one-out RBI double down the left field line.

One out later, a walk loaded the bases, with a run cashed in one batter later on a Destiney Ruiz single up the middle for a 2-1 lead.  Khryssi Steele then roped a 2RBI double to the left center field gap to plate two, and usher a pitching change.

With new Gator pitcher Jordan Stanaland in the circle, Krista Gould walked on five pitches to load the bases, before McEwen unloaded them with a blast to deep center field, accounting for the final Toro runs.

SFSU answered with a run in the bottom of the 7th, but it was too little too late in the 8-2 final.

Steele, McEwen and Brenner each tallied a pair of hits in the win, with Steele's 2 and McEwen's 4 RBI accounting for most of the run production.

Harper worked a complete game to even her record at 3-3, scattering 6 hits with 4 Ks and 3 walks.

CSUDH continued its offense in the nightcap, plating the game's first run in the second after a Veronica Vazquez double that brought in Cassandra Snodgrass, who drew a one-out full-count walk.

A Gator error one inning later accounted for another Toro run, with the final CSUDH score coming in the fourth, courtesy of a Krissi Sylvis RBI single, her first run batted in of the year.

That proved more than enough for game two starter Stephanie Jimenez, who tossed a 2-hit masterpiece in picking up her sixth win of the year.

Jimenez was dominant, facing just three batters in three innings and four batters in three other innings.  She finished with five strikeouts against just three walks, allowing one hit each in the 4th and 5th innings.

Offensively, Vazquez went 3-for-3 with Ruiz picking up 2 hits in the game two win.

The Toros, now 9-5, 5-5 CCAA, hook up with the Gators again tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11:00 am.
