Tritons Take Hard-Fought 71-57 Win Over Toros

CARSON -- National power UC San Diego Tritons got everything they could handle from the Cal State Dominguez Toros even though they came in heavy underdogs en route to a 71-57 Triton victory. Senior Brandie McCann had a solid night in her penultimate home game, scoring nine with three rebounds and an assist.

For the first half, the Toros made it a ballgame throughout the first half, including a quick final five points by McCann to close the half with UCSD leading 38-27.

With the score only 12-10 Tritons six minutes in, UCSD went on a quick 8-0 run to seize the momentum and expand its lead to 10. Over the final 11 minutes the lead would remain around 10, growing to as large as 16 late in the half. The Tritons' inside-out combo of Carlisle and Freidenberg combined for 24 points, six rebounds and three assists, while McCann tied for the team lead in the half with five points with an assist and rebound.

Down 11 to start the second half, CSUDH went on a 6-0 run to bring the score to within five at 38-33. The Tritons responded with a 13-0 run of their own to capture all the momentum and expand the lead to 18. The Toros would mount minor charges but would not threaten the Tritons anymore than they did to start the period.

CSUDH held UCSD to only 35% shooting in the second half and made 13 field goals compared to only six for the Tritons.

For the game CSUDH made two more baskets than UCSD (23-21), but lost in several other battles. Free throw shooting was 24-8 in favor of the Tritons, as was the rebounding battle, 34-28.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will return to the "Dave Yanai Court" Saturday, February 19, against Cal State East Bay with tip-off set for 5:30pm. Saturday will also mark "Senior Day" as well as "Think Pink" day to raise awareness for breast cancer.
