Power Display Spurs Toros to 12-9 Nightcap Win After Falling 2-1 in Opener to CSUSB

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills belted 3 home runs in an offensive 12-9 nightcap win over visiting CS San Bernardino, one game after the Toro bats were rendered virtually silent in a 2-1 loss to open the twinbill.  Senior Krista Gould went 2-3 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI and her first bomb of the year to lead the offense.

The nightcap win handed CSUSB its first conference loss of the year, dropping them to 9-3, 5-1 CCAA.

Unlike the opening game where runs were at a premium, the Toro offense awoke in the second inning of the nightcap, as a pair of 3-run home runs looked to put the game away early.

Nine-hole hitter Daisy Beltran clubbed her first home run of the year after a one-out double and walk set the table for the sophomore outfielder, whose line drive went a foot over the left field fence for a 3-0 Toro lead.

Another walk and a hit batter prompted a Coyote pitching change, but change was exactly what Emiley McEwen asked for as the reigning CCAA MVP hammered the first pitch she saw from reliever Brianne Godfredson deep over the center field fence for a commanding 6-0 lead.

After adding a single run to make it 7-0, the Coyote bats awoke themselves after putting up a pair of runs in the 4th and four in the 5th, with an Alyssa Flores 3-run jack in the 5th doing most of the damage.

CSUDH, however, answered with 3 runs in its 5th-inning at-bat as a 3-base error to begin the frame set the table for the comeback, with Jessica Hall and Jessica Amador knocking in two of the runs with baseknocks, while the other scored on a passed ball.

The Toros again looked to put the pesky Coyotes away with a pair of runs in the 6th, thanks to Gould's first blast of the year, but CSUSB again clawed back with 3 in the 7th on a Courtney Wilhelms 3-run bomb, before reliever Lauren Harper settled in to retire 3 of the final 4 batters to pick up her first save of the year.

Gould and Hall finished with two hits apiece, while the pair along with McEwen and Beltran all enjoyed multiple-RBI efforts.

Runs were at a premium in the opener despite the visitors getting on the board with an RBI single by Alyssa Flores, who won a 10-pitch battle with CSUDH starter Harper.

CSUDH answered in the third after consecutive one-out walks and a wild pitch put runners on 2nd and 3rd, setting the stage for Destiney Ruiz, who ripped a 2-2 offering from Coyote pitcher Erica Prentice off the shortstop's glove to knot the score at 1-1.

That's where the score remained until the top of the 6th when Priscilla Curiel turned on a 2-0 pitch and belted her third home run of the year, this one a liner that just cleared the left field fence.

That proved plenty for CSUSB starter Prentice, who scattered just two hits in the complete game win, fanning 7 Toros against 3 walks.

Ruiz led the Toros with 2 hits in the game, while Harper took the loss in the pitcher's duel.

The Toros, now 7-3, 3-3 CCAA, will resume their series against CSUSB on Tuesday, February 22, due to rain in the southern California area and field conditions.  Sunday's twinbill against Grand Canyon has also been canceled, with no make-up date to be schedule.
