McEwen Belts Two 3-Run Jacks as Toros Cruise Past CS Stanislaus to Split Series

McEwen enjoyed two home run trots in today's 8-0 game one win over CSUS

CARSON -- It took reigning CCAA Player of the Year Emiley McEwen six games to find her power stroke, but on day seven, McEwen found it, and result was two 3-run home runs that powered Cal State Dominguez Hills to its first league win of the year with an 8-0, 5-inning triumph over visiting Cal State Stanislaus.  The Toros swept the day with an identical 8-0 score in the nightcap.

Unlike yesterday's contest that saw CSUDH score just two runs in 17 innings, the Toros struck for three in the first as McEwen turned on a Brittani Weatherford offering with two on, and deposited it over the left field fence for a quick lead.

The offense continued to sparkle with single runs in both the second and third innings, before McEwen put the game away in the fourth.  After the first two Toros batting reached base, two failed sacrifices looked to get CSUS out of the jam.

But unlike yesterday when McEwen was walked intentionally twice, the Warriors chose to face the CSUDH all-time home run leader, and McEwen made them pay again with a 3-run bomb to left center, this time off reliever Kristan Burns.

CSUDH starter Lauren Harper, who yesterday set the Toro single-game record for strikeouts, was the beneficiary of today's offense, tossing 5 innings of 4-hit ball in the win, fanning 6 against zero walks.

Destiney Ruiz, Cassandra Snodgrass and Jessica Hall contributed with a double each as the Toros belted 7 hits, with 5 being of the extra-base variety.

The nightcap looked to be a stark contrast to the opener as neither team was able to get on the board through the first two and half innings.

That all changed in the bottom of the third when the Toros erupted for 6 runs on 4 hits, with 2 CSUS errors aiding the cause.  In the frame, a Jessica Amador blast opened the scoring, with an RBI triple by McEwen, an RBI single by Elizabeth Jimenez, Warrior error, and two bases loaded walks accounting for the damage.

CSUDH added two more an inning later on a Brittany Brenner home run to close the scoring, and complete the 8-0 sweep.

CSUDH starter Stephanie Jimenez picked up the 5-inning win, fanning 5 and scattering 3 hits.

The Toros, now 6-2, 2-2 CCAA, will resume CCAA play next weekend as CS San Bernardino visits Carson, with first pitch of game one's Friday twinbill set for 11 am on Toro Diamond.
