Harper Sets CSUDH Single-Game Strikeout Record as Toros are Swept by CS Stanislaus

CARSON -- Sophomore Lauren Harper established the CSUDH single-game strikeout record with 16 Ks, but it wasn't enough as visiting CS Stanislaus picked up a pair of 3-1 wins over the Toros in the CCAA season-opening double-header for both teams.

Although the Warriors picked up the win in the opener, they played the role of subplot behind Harper as the San Diego native broke a record that stood for 25 years, set by Academic All-American Barb Steffen on March 30, 1985, against Loyola Marymount University.

Harper was magnificent in tossing 9.1 innings of work, fanning at least one batter in all but one inning and the side three times, including three Warriors three times in her 156-pitch performance.

CSUS starter Brittani Weatherford was just as good in the pitcher's duel as the two starters kept the other offenses off the board for the first seven innings of play.

After each team scored a run in the eighth, the Warriors benefited on a bases-loaded error and a hit batter for a pair of runs in CSUS' 3-1 win.

The Toros took an early lead in the nightcap after Emiley McEwen brought home Khryssi Steele with a liner down the right field line after Steele belted an opposite field one-out triple.

That's where the score remaind until the top of the 6th when Jordan Flora turned on starter Stephanie Jimenez's 1-0 offering and deposited it over the right field wall for a 2-1 lead.  CSUS added an insurance run in the seventh, leaving it up to starter Kristan Burns to close her complete-game victory with a 1-2-3 seventh.

McEwen and Destiney Ruiz rapped two hits apiece in the loss, which dropped the Toros to 4-2, 0-2 CCAA, while Jimenez was pegged with her first loss of the year.

The two teams hook up again tomorow to close out the regular season series, with first pitch set for 11:00 am on Toro Diamond.
