Slow Start Spells Defeat in 63-61 Loss to Coyotes


CARSON -- Visiting and undefeated Cal State San Bernardino raced out to a 15-0 lead and held on for a thrilling 63-61 win over host Cal State Dominguez Hills in CCAA men's basketball action tonight in the Torodome.  Senior Wayne Andrews paced the Toros with 16 points in the loss.

With the loss, the Toros dip to 1-3, 1-2 CCAA, with a non-conference contest hosting Point Loma Nazarene looming on Tuesday, with the contest able to be heard on the Toro Sports Network by clicking here.

A CJ Carter jumper resulted in the first two points for the Toros at the 15:50 mark of the first half, and began a run that saw CSUDH out-score CSUSB 15-6 over the next 12 minutes to trim its deficit to 21-15 at the 7:45 mark.

The 'Yotes, however, behind 14 points by Johnny Bell, took a 37-28 lead into the intermission, with a Bell flush accouting for the half's final points.

After Bell began the second half with a pair of freebies to increase CSUSB's lead to 38-28, the Toros used a 17-8 run capped by an Everrett Brown triple to cut their defiit to 46-45 with 11:39 left in regulation, eventually tyin the game at 47-all on an Andrews tip-in.

CSUSB, however, never relinquished its lead and led 63-60 with Robert Willhite was fouled with just 0.5 seconds left.

After making the first free throw and intentionally missing the second, Theron Laudermill secured the rebound to give the 'Yotes the 63-61 win.

Bell led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor, with Laudermill adding 15 and Juan Martinez 11 in the win.

George McGrew, meanwhile, chipped in 11 points and Brown 10 in the loss, as the bigger Coyotes managed a 37 to 29 rebounding edge, and a 4 to none advantage in blocks.
