Balance Equals Success in Toros' 63-53 Win Over UC San Diego

CARSON -- Senior Robert Willhite led a quartet of Toros in double-figure scoring as the balanced attack resulted in a 63-53 win over a game UC San Diego squad tonight on the Dave Yanai Court in the Torodome. With the win, CSUDH picks up its first victory of the new year, moving to 1-2, 1-1 CCAA.

A quick 7-0 run to begin the game got the hosts off on the right foot before the visitors took their first lead of the game on a triple by MacKenzie McCullough. That seemed to wake the Cardinal and Gold up as another 7-0 run regained control of the game, with a Willhite lay-up with 3:49 left in the first period giving CSUDH a commanding 31-16 lead en route to a 35-24 advantage heading into the break.

UC San Diego looked to make a game of it by keeping its deficit to 11 points, but the Toros
stretched their lead to a game-high 20 points on a Myron Green bucket with 7:37 left in regulation, taking another 20-point lead on a Sheldon Allen basket in the paint before a 12-2 run by the Tritons to close the contest gave the Toros the 10-point win.

Willhite led all scorers with 15 points, with Wayne Andrews and George McGrew chipping in 11 points ands Green 10. Justin Brue paced the Tritons with 12 points as UCSD fell to 3-3, 0-2 CCAA.

The Toros will look to keep their win streak going tomorrow night as perennial power CS San Bernardino visits Carson after disposing of Cal State L.A. earlier tonight, 61-48. The game can be heard live on www.GoToros.com/live.
