Hot Shooting Fuels 63-54 Win Over Otters

SEASIDE -- Junior Everett Brown led three Toros in double-figure scoring while Van Girard II (pictured) was one point shy of notching a double-double as Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled away from host CS Monterey Bay in a key 63-54 road win.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 4-3 and 3-2 in league play, while the Otters fall to 2-6 and 1-3 CCAA.

The first half saw four ties and six lead changes, with the hosts enjoying their biggest lead at 25-17 wtih 4:27 left in the period, before an old-fashioned 3-point play by Brown, buckets by reigning CCAA Player of the Week Wayne Andrews and Girard II, and a triple by Cornell Jenkins kept the Toros in the game, entering the half down 32-29.

Four-consecutive points by Andrews tied the game at 32-32 a minute into the second half, before consecutive 3-pointers by Jenkins and Brown gave the Toros a 41-34 lead and breathing room.

CSUDH's lead stretched to 11 with under 10 minutes left in regulation, only to have the Otters get to within 49-47 in a James Albert bucket in the paint.

The Otters inched to within a point at 50-49 on the second of two Brandon Ward made free throws, before CSUDH went on an 8-0 run to all but put the game away, the last points coming on a Myron Green layup, en route to the eventual 9-point win.

Jenkins finished with 11 points with nine coming from long range, while Andrews chipped in 10 in the win.  Girard II, meanwhile, pulled down 11 boards in 32 minutes of play, adding 9 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field and a free throw.

Ward led all scorers with 21 points, but the imbalanced Otter offense proved too big an obstacle for Ward to overcome.

CSUDH shot 20-of-42 from the field (47.6%) and 6-of-14 from downtown (42.9%), while holding the Otters to just 21-of-51 (36.8%) from the field, and 3-of-16 (18.8%) behind the arc.

The Toros conclude the calendar year at home next Friday, December 30, as cross-town rival Cal State L.A. visits Carson for a 3 pm first tip.  The game can be seen live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
