Davis' 25 Leads No. 4 Toros to 76-66 Win Over Chico State, and Into Record Books

Box Score
CHICO -- Senior point guard Marcquintice Davis pointed the Toros to victory tonight with his 25 points in a 76-66 win over Chico State, and into the CSUDH record books with the team's 10th-straight win to set a program record.  With the win, the 4th-ranked team in the nation and top-seeded team in the West Region improves to 16-1, 12-1 CCAA.

With the victory, the Toros nearly made two in a row over the Wildcats by an identical score after the first meeting saw CSUDH take a 76-65 win over CSUC in Carson on December 31.

After the hosts took a 3-0 lead to open the game, the Toros quickly responded with a 17-3 run to quell any hopes of a Chico victory, the last three coming on a triple by Davis at the 12:07 mark.

CSUDH's lead swelled to as high as 18 four times in the half before settling for a 17-point cushion at 43-26 entering the break on a Michael Cox lay-up with just six ticks left before the half.

It was more of the same after intermission as another triple by Davis brought the lead to its biggest at 20, making it 52-32 Toros with 17:16 left in regulation.

A Wildcat spurt cut their deficit to single digits at 57-48 on a Zach Graves foul shot at the 8:41 mark, and to just 6 at 57-51 on a Damario Sims bucket a minute and a half later, but two free throws by reigning CCAA Player of the Week Zareh Zargaryan, a 3-pointer by Tim McLaurin and a bucket by Zargaryan quickly brought CSUDH's lead back to 13 three minutes later, all but putting the game away.

One final CSUC run cut the Wildcat uphill battle again to just six points with 1:23 left, but four final free throws by Davis sealed the win for the Toros, giving them the regular season series sweep.

Davis finished 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc and a perfect 5-of-5 from the foul line to lead all scorers, while Cox added 17 and Zargaryan 12 for the victors as CSUDH shot 54.7% from the field.

Rashad Parker led a quartet of Wildcats who scored in double figures, but CSUC was pounded on the boards to the tune of a 42-21 edge for the Toros, who gathered as many offensive boards (13) as the Wildcats did on the defensive end as Chico State fell to 10-7, 6-7 CCAA.

The Toros, now winners of 10-straight, look to make it 11 tomorrow night at Cal State Stanislaus, which took a 56-55 win over Cal State L.A. in earlier action.
