Toros Speared by the UCSD Tritons in 74-45 Decision

Box Score
LA JOLLA -- Against a perennial NCAA tournament participant in UC San Diego on the road, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros knew they were facing a tall order. The order was made even tougher thanks to some hot shooting from the host squad, eventually falling 74-45.
Freshman Hillarie Perrin-Grant contributed eight points, three assists and two rebounds.

After the Toros began the game with a three-pointer by Perrin-Grant, UCSD (10-7, 8-2 CCAA) went on a 13-0 run on a series of defensive stops. However CSUDH would go on their own 9-0 run to make it a one point game at 13-12 with 13:13 left in the first half.

Momentum for the Toros was short-lived as the powerhouse Tritons flexed their muscles by opening the lead to 22 on a 25-4 run over the next eight minutes. Going into halftime the score was 46-23 UC San Diego, thanks in part to 10 three-pointers by the host squad. Junior Ashley Hudson had five points, three rebounds and an assist going into the locker room.

The second half saw even play throughout as UCSD's lead hovered around the halftime advantage of 23. CSUDH limited its turnovers and ran a more efficient offense led by the six points and as assist in the half by Nikki Boutte', but were unable to make a dent in suffering the lopsided loss.

For the game the Toros shot a respectable 43.6%, though the Tritons were a solid 49.1% from the field.  Three-point shooting was solid for both sides with CSUDH leading 50% to 42.3%, but CS Dominguez Hills could not overcome the turnover differential of 27-18, including 17-6 in the first half.

The Toros (2-12, 2-8 CCAA) return home on Friday, January 21 against Sonoma State at 5:30pm on the "Dave Yanai Court."
