No. 19 Seawolves Claim CCAA Tournament Title With Two Wins Over Toros

Box Score
STOCKTON -- Second-seeded and No. 19 Sonoma State shook off a game one loss to open the CCAA Championship Tournament to storm back with four-straight wins to claim the CCAA Tournament Championship after 6-4 (8) and 3-1 decisions over CS Dominguez Hills in the championship round.

With the loss, CSUDH falls to 33-21, but looks forward to receiving a bid to the NCAA West Region on selection Monday, May 10, after defeating No. 3 seeded SSU in the opener, and No. 6 seeded Chico State in the semifinal round of the championships.

The Seawolves jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to open championship play, and withstood a Toro rally that saw CSUDH knot the game before rallying with a 2-run blast in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-4 win in the championship round of the CCAA Tournament, forcing a second game that will decide the tournament title.  Junior Krista Gould notched three of the runs with a bases-clearing double.

The Seawolves jumped all over Toro starter Lauren Harper in the first inning, using a single and error to set the stage for Ashley Britton, who gave SSU a quick 3-0 lead with a blast over the left-center field fence.

After adding another run in the third, the Toros tied the game in the fourth after Michelle Miranda drew a bases-loaded walk, and Gould plastered an 0-2 offering from SSU starter Julianne Martinez down the left field line to bring home the other three runners for the tie.

That's where the game remained until the top of the eight, when Britton drew a walk from Toro reliever Stephanie Jimenez, and Ali Palermo followed that with a home run to dead center, accounting for the game's final runs.

Jimenez was tagged for the loss (18-10) after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing both runs in the eighth, while Jackie Reyes paced CSUDH's offense with 2 of the team's 6 hits.

In a role reversal from the opening game between the two teams that saw CSUDH club two homers to SSU's one, it was the Seawolves who flexed their power with two blasts, to none for the Toros.

The nightcap saw both teams stay off the board until the fourth inning, when the Seawolves strung together three hits for a run, only to see the Toros reply in their bottom half at-bat as CCAA MVP Emiley McEwen belted her 11th home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1, setting the new CSUDH record for home runs in a single-season.

The Toros had a chance to take the lead in the fifth after an error and single put two runners on base with no out, but SSU pitcher Martinez escaped the jam, fanning McEwen looking to get out of the frame.

Using that momentum, SSU used three more hits in the sixth to plate two runs to take a 3-1 lead, handing the ball to Martinez who retired six of the final seven batters she faced to give the Seawolves the CCAA Tournament Title.

The CCAA tournament runner-ups placed four on the All-Tournament team, including Harper, Amber Angel, Gould and Caitlin McGrath.
