Softball Salvages Split at UCSD With 10-1 Nightcap Win After 4-2 Loss in Opener

LA JOLLA -- Senior Amber Angel's 3-for-4 effort in game two led a 14-hit attack in which four Toros drove in two runs apiece as CSUDH took a 10-1 romp over host UC San Diego after the Tritons escaped with a 4-2 win in the opener.  Junior Jackie Reyes (pictured) led the Toros with a 4-for-6 effort on the afternoon.

The Toros erupted for a 10-0 lead after four innings of play, cruising to the mercy run rule victory.

With one out in their first-inning at-bat, four hits, a walk and a fielder's choice gave CSUDH a 4-0 lead, with the possible fifth run being thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning.

That didn't stop the Toro bats, however, as CSUDH put up five runs over the next two innings to take a commanding 9-0 lead, capitalizing on a Triton error in the second and four hits in the third, the big blow courtesy of an Emiley McEwen 2RBI single.

Adding the 10th and final run in the fourth on a Krista Gould double proved plenty for CSUDH starter Stephanie Jimenez, who scattered three hits in improving to 13-8 on the year.

McEwen, Reyes and Gould added two hits apiece for the Toros, while Angel, McEwen, Rose Vargas and Gould drove home two runs each.

The opener started promising for the Toros after Reyes gave CSUDH a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single to left field after Angel was plunked on a 1-0 count.

That momentum was short-lived, however, as the hosts knotted the game at one two innings later, and then took the lead for good in the fifth after designated player Katie Belanger roped an 0-2 offering from Jimenez deep for a 3-run job, putting UCSD up 4-1.

The Toros had one last gasp in their final at-bat after Caitlin McGrath laced an RBI single up the middle to drive home Michelle Miranda, but Katie Garcia was caught up trying to score from first base on the play, and was tagged out for the final out of the contest in the 4-2 final.

Reyes and McGrath led the Toros with two hits apiece, while CSUDH starter Lauren Harper was tagged for the loss after tossing 4.0 innings.

The Toros, now 21-17, 13-11 CCAA and No. 10 in the West, will get another opportunity to creep up in the West Region poll as the No. 6 seeded CS Monterey Bay Otters visit Carson next weekend for a key CCAA four-game set.
