Toros Unable To Pull Series Sweep Over Coyotes, Grab 5-2 Win Before Dropping Nightcap 13-5

Game 1  |  Game 2

SAN BERNARDINO -- Looking for a sweep today and a chance to move up in the NCAA's West Region rankings, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team scored five runs in each game, behind an Emiley McEwen 2RBI single in the opener, posting a 5-2 win before dropping the nightcap 13-5.

With the split, CSUDH took six-of-eight from the Coyotes, including three that counted towards the CCAA standings.

In game one, the Toros struck first on McEwen's double, a 2RBI effort that drove in both Katie Garcia and Caitlin McGrath, with Garcia reaching on a single through the right.

With the hosts scoring two in the game, the game-winner came courtesy of Jackie Reyes with an RBI single that drove in McEwen in the 5-2 win.

Also scoring five in the day's nightcap and series closer, the runs were not enough as a trio of 'Yotes belted three hits apiece in the loss.

For CSUSB, Britney Butler, Ashley Collinwood and Alyssa Flores peppered the Toro circle with three hits each with a combined 5RBI and six runs among the group.

The Toros' best say in game two came in the first inning, with Garcia, McGrath and McEwen all scoring following two straight singles and a fielder's choice.

With the Coyotes scoring eight themselves in the first, Michelle Miranda belted her second homer of the series before Garcia scored to end CSUDH's say on the day.

Grabbing the game one win, Lauren Harper went four innings with two Ks, allowing only one run on four hits.

In the loss, Wendy Espindola started from the circle to log 2.2 innings, taking seven runs on six hits while fanning one batter.

The Toros, now 27-19 overall and 19-13 in the CCAA, close out the 2010 regular season with a four game series against the San Francisco State Gators at home on April 23 and 24, needing three wins or two wins and a combination of losses from teams trailing them to clinch their first-ever berth into the CCAA Championship Tournament, set for April 30-May 2.
