Toros Settle for Split After 11-2 Opening Game Romp Over Otters

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills belted two home runs in the opener, including a 3-run blast by Jackie Reyes in the bottom of the fourth frame to account for the mercy rule runs, as CSUDH took a convincing 11-2 win over visiting CS Monterey Bay, but the Otters rallied behind a 13-hit attack in the nightcap in a 5-3 win.

With the split, CSUDH, ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA West Region poll, will look to move up the ladder after taking 3-of-4 from CSUMB, ranked No. 5 last week.

After Jenny Montez gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead with a one-out home run in the first, the Toros put the game away with five in the second and six in the fourth in the game called due to the mercy run rule.

In the second, CSUDH plated five runners on just one hit by Katie Jordan, capitalizing on three Otter errors, including two on the same play that allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.

In the sixth, however, the Toros strung together four hits for their six runs, the big blows coming on a Michelle Miranda leadoff home run, a Rose Vargas 2RBI double and Reyes' 3-run bomb to dead center, her first home run of the year.

That was plenty for starter Lauren Harper, who improved to 6-6 in her complete-game win, fanning five against just one walk.

In the nightcap, the Toros got on the board first after Katie Garcia doubled to lead off the contest, and scored on an Otter error.

CSUMB, however, answered with three in the third to take the lead for good off Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez, stringing together four hits, including a 2RBI single by Shea Olds.

CSUDH cut the lead to one after Caitlin McGrath belted the first pitch she saw to right center with the speedy Jordan on second base, but again the Otters answered, this time with two in the fifth on a Jamie Moon blast with a runner on base.

The Toros got one run back on an Emiley McEwen sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Otter pitcher Nicole Garcia wouldn't be denied on this day, retiring the side in order in the final two innings for the win, with first baseman Moon recording all the outs at first base in the bottom of the seventh.

Reyes led the Toros with three hits and three RBI on the day, helping move the Otters to 25-15, 18-10 CCAA on the year, while Harper finished the series with two wins and a save.

The Toros, now 24-18, 16-12 CCAA, hit the road for their final road trip of the year, battling CS San Bernardino next weekend with both CCAA and NCAA playoff implications at stake.
