Angel Reaches Base Seven Times as Toros Split at CS Stanislaus

TURLOCK -- Senior Amber Angel did her best impression of slugger Albert Pujols this afternoon as she ripped three doubles in the opener, and belted a home run with three unintentional intentional walks in the nightcap as CSUDH took game one 4-1, but fell 3-2 in the nightcap, to move to 11-9, 6-8 CCAA.

Angel's three doubles in the opener tied the record set by former Toro great Kate Groden on March 24, 2004, for the most doubles in a single game, while CSUS' comeback win in the nightcap gave the Warriors their first league victory of the year.

In the opener, the Toros did all the damage they would need to do in their first at-bat of the morning, as three hits, including the first of Angel's three doubles and an Emiley McEwen 2RBI single to left field on the first pitch she saw from Warrior starter Brittani Weatherford gave CSUDH a quick 2-0 lead.

After the Warriors cut the lead in half off CSUDH starter Stephanie Jimenez in their first-inning at-bat, that was as good as it would get for the hosts as Jimenez scattered just five hits the rest of the game in the win.

The Toros added single runs in the 5th and 7th innings on Angel's second double of the game and a Jessica Hall triple, accounting for the final tally.

Jimenez allowed just six total hits and the earned run, while fanning six against four walks to improve to 7-3.  CSUDH's offense pounded out 10 hits in the win, led by Angel's three and two each by McEwen, Katie Garcia and Hall.

The nightcap looked like a pitche's duel to begin things, as CSUDH starter Wendy Espindola and CSUS starter Jennifer Arnold, who allowed two hits between them through three innings, and one walk to Angel, on five pitches.

That all changed in the fourth as Angel led off the frame, and turned on an Arnold 2-2 offering, belting it deep over the center field fence for a 1-0 lead.  One out later, a Michelle Miranda single and ensuing sacrifice bunt set the stage for Jessica Marlow, who ripped an opposite field double to plate the speedy senior for a 2-0 lead.

CSUS cut the lead in half in their fourth-inning at bat, but chased Espindola in the 6th after the leadoff batter drew a five-pitch walk to begin the frame.

Reliever and game-one winner Jimenez escaped that potential rally, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh when she walked the first batter she faced on four pitches.  A sacrifice bunt and RBI double later knotted the game at two, and two intentional walks after a wild pitch looked to set the stage for an inning-ending double play, but catcher Missy Corral laced a 1-2 pitch up the middle to give the hosts an exciting 3-2 win.

Caitlin McGrath led the Toros with two hits, while Angel reached base in all four at-bats, including three walks on 15 pitches.

Weather permitting, the two teams hook up again tomorrow morning for the final two regular season league contests of the season.
