Softball Starts Tournament of Champions With Two Wins

TURLOCK -- Making a return to a tournament that saw them advance to the title game last year, Cal State Dominguez Hills survived a slugfest in its opening contest of the annual Tournament of Champions in an 11-9 (8) decision over No. 18 Grand Canyon, before a 13-2 (5) rout over Chaminade in game two, while closing the day in a 2-0 pitcher's duel loss to University of Hawai'i Hilo. Emiley McEwen led all batters on the day, going 6-of-9 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Against the 'Lopes, the Toros took a 4-0 lead after their first at-bat, courtesy of three extra base hits and a sacrifice fly, only to see GCU tally single runs in their first three plate appearances to trim the lead to 4-3.

A two-RBI single by McEwen in the 5th looked to give CSUDH breathing room with an 8-3 lead, but the Antelopes clawed back with three of their own in their bottom half, and two more in the 7th to knot the game at 8-8 on a 2-run blast by Teddy Barry.

Applying the international extra inning rule by placing a runner on second to start the 8th, CSUDH used a sacrifice bunt, RBI singles by Caitlin McGrath and Rose Vargas and a 'Lope error for three more runs, before holding off GCU with one run in their 8th-inning effort to take the 11-9 win.

Stephanie Jimenez threw 145 pitches in the win, including 98 for strikes, and fanned six against one walk, while McGrath, Vargas and Krista Gould joined McEwen with three hits apiece.

Against the Silverswords, CSUDH jumped out to a 9-1 lead after two innings of play, the big blows coming on a Gould 2RBI single in the first, and a Vargas 2RBI single and three Chaminade errors as part of a 6-run second inning.

CSUDH added four more in the fourth on three RBI hits, two more Sword miscues and a wild pitch for their final scoring of the frame, allowing Toro starter Wendy Espindola to cruise to her fourth win of the season after scattering seven hits and fanning four.

All but one starter had a hit in the game, as the Toros roped 13 hits in this contest, with two for extra bases.

Against the Vulcans, both teams went scoreless for five straight frames, with Gould giving the Toros their closest opportunity to score, getting as far as second before the inning closed.

UHH took full advantage of a Toro error to place a runner on before a 2RBI double from Kanani Numata brought in the only runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Making her return after a month of recovery, Lauren Harper took the loss after six innings of duty, fanning three Vulcan batters and scattering six hits.

With her 6-of-9 effort, McEwen leads all batters while Gould clocks in a close second at 5-of-11 with 3 RBI and Vargas a close third at 4-of-9 and 4 RBI.

Now with a 19-12 overall record the Toros will continue tournament play tomorrow as they take on Dixie State College at 8:00am and Western Washington University at 2:00pm before Sunday's bracket play.
