Toros Drop 73-48 Decision to No. 14 Tritons to Bring 2009-10 to an End

LA JOLLA -- A second-half shot at redemption, fueled by the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team shooting 44.8% from the floor, was too little, too late as the host No. 14 Tritons of UC San Diego ended any chance of the Toros extending their season in a 73-48 loss in the RIMAC Arena.  Key for the Toros was MacKenzie Mathias with 13 points and five boards on the night.

Mathias accounted for the Toros' last chance at a win only a minute into the game, sinking a close jumper to give CSUDH a 5-3 lead.

The hosts came out full throttle from then on, riding a 15-2 streak to grab their first double-digit lead on a Charity Smith fast break basket.

The game's momentum was draped in blue and gold the rest of the half, even with Mathias sinking her only trey of the game to send CSUDH into the locker room down 40-18.

The second half came in with both teams matching each other from the floor and the Toros using a 20-12 advantage in the first 13 minutes to chip away their deficit to 40-54, fueled by Mathias' offense.

The Toros would grab only two in the final few minutes of play with Kayla Huckabee taking her call at the line and sinking both freebies before the buzzer sounded in the blowout loss.

Mathias pulled out her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season at 13 points, an effort equally matched by Brandie McCann.

The closest Toro behind the leading duo was Jessica Cannon with seven.

Rebounds also proved costly as the hosts grabbed 46, far too many over the CSUDH mark of 29, led by Cannon, Mathias and Whitney Gantt with five.

The first round loss is the ninth overall appearance for the squad in the CCAA post-season and third-straight.

The loss ends the 2009-10 season for the Toros at 10-18 overall and 9-13 in the CCAA.
