No. 8 Tritons Overwhelm Toros, 83-57, to Sweep Regular Season Series

LA JOLLA -- Host UC San Diego showed why it is ranked 8th in the nation, taking a convincing 83-57 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills to sweep the regular season series and keep its 2009-10 home record perfect.  Mackenzie Mathias led a trio of Toros in double-figure scoring with 15 points, but the Tritons shot an even 50.0% from the field in the blowout win.

The hosts took the lead quick and strong in the first, building up to a 8-3 advantage off a Chelsea Carlisle basket from the paint.

The visiting Toros turned the momentum around, turning a Mathias trey into a tied game before another three, from Kayla Montalvo would give CSUDH its first and last lead of the game at 11-8 with 14:52 left.

Regaining the lead, the Tritons used an end-of-the-half push to go into the break with a 42-23 lead, but not before CSUDH's Brandie McCann could grab two freebies and bring the Toros back up to 25-42.

A three once again changed the game, this time for the hosts at the 9:58 mark, as Daisy Feder hit her mark and gave the Tritons a 64-32 lead, their biggest on the night.

Two final Mathias threes in the final five-minutes of play gave the Toros a too-little, too-late push, dropping their deficit to 21 before UCSD stole the game, 83-57 final.

Leading a trio of double-digit Toro scorers, Mathias grabbed 15 points, nine from beyond the line.  Both Neka Mixon and Whitney Gantt rounded out the offensive line for CSUDH, tallying 13 points apiece.

The Tritons also boasted three in double-figures, Daisy Feder with 19, Cheslea Carlisle 17 and Annette Ilg with 14.

Barbara Houston led from the glass for CSUDH, grabbing seven boards.  Her Triton counterpart Tiffany Hunter grabbed five rebounds to lead UCSD.

The loss drops the Toros to a 7-13 overall record (6-9 CCAA).  They continue their road series as they take on the Pioneers of CCAA newcomer Cal State East Bay on Saturday, February 6 at 5:30pm.
