Wildcats Sweep Toros out of Chico in 9-1 and 3-2 Wins

CHICO -- The games were far from similar, but the results unfortunately were the same for the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team as the Toros were swept by Chico State in 9-1 (5) and 3-2 (11) decisions.  With the losses, CSUDH falls to 10-8, 5-7 CCAA, dropping 3-of-4 to the Wildcats.  Senior Katie Garcia led the offense with a 4-for-7 afternoon, with two runs scored.

The opener was all Chico State as the Wildcats scored two runs in four of the first five innings to put the game away early.  Freshman Lauren Harper lasted just 1.1 innings in falling to 4-2 on the year, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs without a strikeout, while the Wildcat bats continued to hit reliever Wendy Espindola, tagging her for 5 earned runs in 3.1 innings of work en route to 12 hits in the romp called after five innings of play due to the run rule.

The seven regulation innings weren't enough in the nightcap, as the two teams battled through a 2-2 tie after seven.  The Toros looked in good position for a split after an Emiley McEwen sacrifice fly plated Garcia with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th, only to have the Wildcats catch the Toros again in their 10th-inning at-bat on a double-steal.

CSUC completed its comeback one inning later as the first two batters reached base against Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez, prompting a pitching change.

After a wild pitch by Espindola advanced the runners a base, a Rebecca Johnson baseknock to right field brought home the game-winner, and sent the Toros home with three losses in four games.

CSUDH looks to bounce back in another northern California trip as it travels to Turlock to battle CS Stanislaus in a four-game league set.
