Toros Settle for Split in CCAA Twinbill at Chico State

CHICO -- Freshman Lauren Harper threw a complete-game win without an earned run allowed in an opening game 3-2 win, before host Chico State survived to take a 7-5 win in the nightcap after posting five runs in their first inning at-bat.  With the split, CSUDH moves to 10-6, 5-5 CCAA.

The Toros got on the board first in the second inning as Katie Jordan singled home Jessica Hall, who led off the frame with a single and moved to third base on a Michelle Miranda double.

After CSUC knotted the contest two innings later on a leadoff single and Toro error, CSUDH re-took the lead in the seventh as Emiley McEwen punched home two runs on a sharp single up the middle, giving the Toros their final runs in the eventual 3-2 win.

Katie Garcia and McEwen led the Toros with two hits apiece, while Harper scattered 7 hits in improving to 4-1 on the year, out-dueling Wildcat Kacie McCarthy and spoiling CSUC's season home-opener.

The nightcap was a different story as the Wildcats exploded for a five-run 1st inning, the big blow coming on a Jenna Wermes 2RBI double.

The Toros scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd frames, before tying the game at 5-5 in the fourth on three hits, courtesy of an Amber Angel 2RBI base-knock.

CSUDH's momentum was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats struck back with two runs in the 5th off reliever Wendy Espindola, who suffered the loss after tossing 3.0 innings of work and just two hits.

The two teams complete their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for an 11:00 am start.
