Seven Proves Lucky for Seawolves in Sweep Over Toros

Emiley McEwen went deep for the 4th time this season, but it wasn't enough as CSUDH was swept by Sonoma State

CARSON -- Visiting Sonoma State rolled a pair of 7s this morning, and the result was a 7-1 and 7-6 sweep over host Cal State Dominguez Hills in both conference and non-conference action, dropping the Toros to 7-5, 4-4 CCAA.  Emiley McEwen (pictured) and Katie Jordan both coll
ected 3 hits to lead the Toro offense.

After blistering visiting Sonoma State's pitchers in a dominating victory yesterday morning, the Seawolves turned the tables on CSUDH in game one of today's double-header, limiting CSUDH to just three hits in a 7-1 win.  Jessica Marlow tallied one of the hits, including the Toros' lone RBI of the game.

After Michelle Miranda beat out an infield single with two out, Marlow roped a triple down the right field line to give CSUDH an early 1-0 lead.

That was as good as it would get for the Toros, however, as the Seawolves scored the final 7 runs of the game, including blasts from Simone Brandalise, Janelle Arnold and LeeAnn Stroud, with Stroud collecting three hits in the win.

Freshman Stephanie Jimenez took the loss after allowing 5 earned runs on 7 hits, while Seawolf Julianne Martinez picked up the win.

The non-conference nightcap looked to be more of the same after SSU starting pitcher Brandalise helped her own cause with a 3-run blast to left center in the 3rd, taking a 4-0 lead after adding a solo run in the 4th.

CSUDH would answer in their 4th-inning at-bat, however, as four hits and a sacrifice fly by Miranda cut SSU's lead to just 4-3, only to have the Seawolves answer two innings later as two doubles drove in three more runs, the big blow coming on a Janelle Arnold 2RBI effort.

The Toros would rally themselves, plating one in the 6th on a bases-loaded walk by Rose Vargas, and two on a 2-run jack by McEwen to bring CSUDH to within one run with none out, but SSU game one winner Julianne Martinez buckled down and retired three of the next four batters to pick up her second win in as many games.

The nightcap also marked the return of pitcher Lauren Harper, who returned to the circle with 6.0 innings of work after last seeing action in the season-opening Best of the West Tournament in Turlock where she picked up two shutout wins en route to the CCAA Pitcher of the Week award.

CSUDH continues non-conference action against a conference opponent on Wednesday, February 24, as CS San Bernardino visits Carson for a 1:00 pm first pitch on Toro Diamond.
