First Inning Explosion Fuels 6-1 Win Over Sonoma State

CARSON -- Fueled by home runs by Emiley McEwen and Rose Vargas (pictured), Cal State Dominguez Hills road a 5-run first inning to a 6-1 win over visiting Sonoma State, pushing its record to 7-3, 4-3 CCAA.  The two teams will play two tomorrow, with first pitch of game one's league contest set for 10:00 am, followed by a non-conference affair immediately thereafter.

Today's contest was a complete reversal of yesterday's games when SSU belted four home runs to CSUDH's lone shot.  After the Seawolves were retired in order in their first at-bat, two walks and an RBI single by Caitlin McGrath got the Toros on the board, and an ensuing double steal, including one of home by Michelle Miranda, set the stage for Vargas' 3-run blast two batters later, giving the hosts a 5-0 lead after one.

McEwen added a solo shot to lead off the third to up CSUDH's cushion to 6-0, before SSU countered with a home run of its own, courtesy of LeeAnn Stroud.

But that was as good as it would get for the Seawolves on this day, as Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez breezed to a complete-game win, scattering 5 hits and fanning 6 in the win.

CSUDH handed reigning pitcher of the week Samantha Lipperd her first loss of the year, as SSU fell to 6-3, 2-1 CCAA.

The two teams conclude their 5-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 10 am on Toro Diamond.
