Seawolves Power Paves Way in 4-3 and 11-4 Sweep of Toros

CARSON -- Visiting Sonoma State smacked two home runs in each of the two games this afternoon, and the result was a 4-3 and 11-4 sweep of host Cal State Dominguez Hills. Amber Angel collected her own blast to lead the Toros in today's losses.

An Angel blast to lead off the second inning of the opener and an RBI single one inning later gave the Toros an early lead, before SSU flexed its own power in the 5th as Brittanie Verrissimo turned on starter Stephanie Jimenez's pitch, and belted her blast over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

CSUDH looked to regain control of the contest in their 6th inning at-bat after a Jessica Marlow RBI single, but three walks, including one with the bases juiced, again knotted the game, sending it into extra innings.

That's where SSU went deep again, as Ali Palermo sent a blast well over the left field fence, giving SSU the only lead it would need after starter Samantha Lipperd retired the Toros in their 8th-inning at-bat for the win.

Sonoma State, which improved to 6-2, 2-0 CCAA, continued its offensive prowess in the nightcap, scoring three runs in both the 2nd and 3rd frames to take a 6-0 lead, the big blasts coming on a LeeAnn Stroud 2RBI double and Rochelle Vanyi 3-run homerun of starter Wendy Espindola.

The Toros finally got to SSU starter Julieanne Martinez in the 5th, using an Angel 2RBI single, a Jessica Hall RBI single and SSU error to plate four runs to get back into the contest, only to have the Seawolves bat around in the 7th inning and plate 5 runs to put the game away in the 11-4 runaway win.

CSUDH, which fell to 6-3, 3-3 CCAA, and SSU continue their four-game league set with a twinbill tomorrow morning at 11:00 am, weather permitting.
