Toros "Reign" on No. 3 St. Cloud's Parade in 78-65 Decision

Box Score
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Coming off a dominating 27-point season-opening win over No. 24 BYU-Hawai'i on Monday, the Toros took down another ranked opponent in a suffocating 78-65 win over No. 3 St. Cloud State in the opening game of the GCU Tip-Off Classic in which CSUDH held the Huskies to just 40% shooting from the floor.  Michael Cox led all scorers with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field.

The Toros jumped to an 8-2 lead with just under four minutes elapsed, keeping their lead at six at 18-12 on a Zareh Zargaryan bucket with 12:15 left in the half.

St. Cloud, however, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four last season, cut its lead to 23-20 on a pair of Taylor Witt freebies at the 9:09 mark, before CSUDH replied with an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to regain control of the game at 34-23, entering the locker room up 42-30 after a late Brett Putz triple with 15 seconds left in regulation.

CSUDH continued to apply the offensive pressure with the first four points of the second half, pushing its advantage to 20 at 57-37 on a three by Marcquintice Davis with 14:14 left in regulation, a lead that increased to a game-high 21 after a pair of Davis free throws gave the Toros control for good at 69-48.

The Huskies whittled their deficit to 71-57 at the 3:33 mark, before CSUDH's starters returned to quell the would-be rally, en route to the 78-65 victory.

In addition to Cox, Zargaryan finished with 16 points, while Davis' 16 and Robert Willhite's 12 rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Toros.

Now 2-0, CSUDH shot a sizzling 57% from the floor, while draining 82% from the charity stripe.  SCSU, meanwhile, was limited to 40% shooting from the field, also hurting itself after missing 12 of 29 free throws.

St. Cloud managed more steals and an even amount of assists and turnovers, but the Toros took a 35-31 rebounding edge and posted the game's lone block.

CSUDH continues the GCU Tip-Off Classic tomorrow against the University of Minnesota-Duluth, with first tip set for 1:15 pm PST.  Click here for live stats.
