Vance Vanquishes Cougars in 1-0 Double OT Win

CARSON -- With just 71 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, redshirt freshman Britney Vance
secured the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team's first win of the season after collecting a loose ball deep in the Cougar box and sliding it past Cal State San Marcos' keeper for a 1-0 win.

The score remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play, with the hosts taking 6 of the 10 total shots in the period.  CSUDH nearly took a 1-0 lead a minute into the second half after #Brooke Thompson sent a picture-perfect cross through the Cougar defense to a waiting Jessica Murphy#, who shanked her shot by an open net.

The Toros looked to take the lead again late in the half after a scramble found the ball aloft between the Cougar keeper and Vance, but Vance's header flew just wide of the goal to keep the game scoreless.

That all changed in the second overtime as Vance corralled a loose ball deep in the CSUSM zone and sent a low line drive that beat keeper Kaycee Gunion for the golden goal.

The Toros out-shot the visitors 14-8 for the game, including 1-0 in the decisive second overtime, but were out-cornered 6-2.  Gunion made five saves compared to her counterpart #Alyssa Congdon#, who repelled two shots in the win, the Toros' first.

Later in the evening, sophomore #Paige Peel# was the women's soccer recipient of the inaugural JT Minami Memorial Scholarship, as presented by head coach Joe Flanagan, CSUDH Athletics Director Patrick Guillen and Mr. and Mrs. Minami.

The Toros, now 1-2 on the season, host cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Tuesday, September 8, to kick off CCAA Conference play.  First kick is set for 4:30 pm in Toro Stadium, at the Track and Field Facility of the Home Depot Center.
