Toros Keep it Close in 3-0 Season Opening Loss to Seattle Pacific

Box Score
CARSON -- Despite a 3-0 loss in their season opener to Seattle Pacific, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team used exceptional defense and serving to keep constant pressure on the Falcons in the opener of the 2009 SoCal Classic. Sara Murray paved the way on the floor with 14 digs.

The Toros appeared to have things in control early on in game one with a 7-4 lead off a Madison Horsley service ace. The Falcons reversed the count using six CSUDH attack errors in their favor to grab a 16-8 lead before taking the Toros 25-20.

Game two saw the Toros fall behind quickly to 8-3 before Ashley Clark would rally the Toros to a what became a close game at Toros 18, Falcons 21.

Five total kills from Clark were not enough in two as the Toros would drop again 25-19.

Plagued by attack errors and a low attack percentage, CSUDH switched up strategies in the third to rally to a healthy 7-3 lead and holding it all the way to 23-22.

An untimely Falcon kill from Joelle Perez landed a tied game which led to a back-and-forth match to 26-all.

Another Clark kill was the last point the Toros would see before dropping 28-26.

Despite sub-par hitting, Clark landed 13 kills, followed closely by newcomer Samantha Maxwell with seven. On a whole the Toros connected on 34 kills to SPU's 42.

Defense was the true strength in the game with libero Murray grabbing 14 digs and Horsley bringing 12 of her own for a team total of 47.

Now with a 0-1 record the Toros will continue play in the 2009 SoCal Classic tomorrow against the Vikings of Western Washington University. First serve is slated for 1:00pm.
