Turlock, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills fell 5-3 in the Tournament of Champions title game to Hawaii Pacific, suffering its first loss of the tournament. Senior Regina Farfan was named Tournament MVP for her efforts after leading the Toros to a 7-1 record over the weekend.
Farfan, who started her eighth game against the Sea Warriors, was up to the task early, keeping HPU off the board through three innings of work. The Chino native, however, ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing three hits including a 2RBI baseknock that opened the scoring to give HPU a 2-0 lead.
The Sea Warriors doubled their lead two innings later after a two-run blast, and added a single run in the seventh before the Toros mounted a rally in their final at-bat.
In the frame, a Liz Vazquez walk with two out jump started the Toro offense, setting the stage for a Jessica Marlow RBI single, an RBI for Christine Bathauer after she was plunked with the bases loaded, and an RBI single by Katie Garcia, but HPU fanned the last batter of the game to give them the TOC Title.
Vazquez joined Farfan on the All-Tournament team after batting .478 over the weekend and finishing with 11 hits. Farfan, meanwhile, posted a 6-1 record, a 0.84 ERA, and 22 strikeouts against just six walks in limiting opposing hitters to a paltry .171 batting average.
In the semifinal match-up against Western Washington, Farfan fanned three Vikings in the 4-3 extra inning win to advance the Toros to the title game against HPU after pushing across the game's only run in the earlier victory over No. 19 Dixie State to open Gold Bracket competition.
Now at 30-14, the Toros continue non-conference action tomorrow with a twinbill against University of South Dakota, with first pitch set for 1:00 pm on Toro Diamond.
