Toros Left Out of CCAA Tournament After Being Swept at CS Stanislaus

Game 1  |  Game 2

Turlock, CA -- The Toros suffered their first regular season series sweep of the year after dropping a 4-3 decision in 13 innings in game one, and 5-0 in the nightcap to CS Stanislaus, costing them a berth in the CCAA Softball Tournament, set for next weekend.

Entering the week as the No. 7 seed in the NCAA west, CSUDH could be left out in the cold after losing six of its last eight, while No. 8 seed UC San Diego finished with a split at CS Monterey Bay, and the Otters, at No. 9, winning six of their last eight and finishing as the second seed in the upcoming CCAA tournament.

Game one saw the Toros play their longest game of the year, a marathon that included 92 at-bats and 27 runners left on base between the two teams.

After the hosts took a 3-1 lead after three innings, the Toros replied with two to tie in the fifth after a Warrior error and a sacrifice fly by Regina Farfan.

Sixteen scoreless halves of play later, CSUS finally broke through in the bottom of the 13th as consecutive errors put a runner on second base and, after a sacrifice to move the runner to third and an intentional walk to set up a potential double play opportunity, Brittany Balanesi stroked a single to right field to end the marathon, and give CSUS its third-consecutive win over the Toros.

Farfan tossed nine innings in relief in taking the loss as each side tallied 10 hits and committed three errors apiece.

After a gut-wrenching loss in the opener, it was all CS Stanislaus in the nightcap as the Warriors lived up to their nickname by talling all the runs they would need in the fourth and fifth innings.

Senior Liz Vazquez tallied two of CSUDH's six hits in the regular season finale, a loss that knocked the Toros from the CCAA Tournament after needing just one win in their final four games to make the field.

Dropping four in a row and six of their final eight, the Toros' hold on the No. 7 spot in the NCAA West region seems precarious at best, with No. 8 UC San Diego winning three of its last five contests, and No. 9 CS Monterey Bay taking six of its last eight, with both schools also making the CCAA's field of four that starts next week.

The Toros, now at 35-23, 17-15 CCAA, will have to wait until their fate is revealed by the NCAA Championship selection committee to see if their season will continue, a decision that will be announced with the second-to-final poll on Wednesday, April 29.
