Toros Alum Carmelita Jeter Now the Fastest Woman in the World in 100-Meter Dash

Walnut, CA -- It has been six years since Carmelita Jeter donned the Cardinal & Gold, the last time being at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2003 in which she posted a career-best mark of 11.79 in the 100-meter dash.  This past weekend, Jeter once again improved on that mark with a time of 10.96 at the 51st Annual Mt. SAC Relays, giving her the distinction of becoming the fastest woman in the world for the second time in her career.

"Jeter and I have been working together for the past eight years but in our last four years she has realized that there is really something there," says Jeter's former head coach and current CSUDH track & field coach Warren Edmonson. "Last year she was disappointed that she didn't make the Olympic team and she really should have. Everyone has to go through that down period, but she got herself re-focused and dedicated this season to getting back on top.  I know that she has been doing a lot of work and in her mind she is unbeatable, so she deserved this."

Running in the relays since attending high school at Torrance's Bisphop Montgomery, Jeter posted the best mark in the event since 1992 and put her name on the Mt. SAC all-time list.

There has been no mistake in Jeter's improving performances which began in 2007 after she won the Mt. SAC relay that same year.  Since then she has competed in the International Association of Athletics Foundation (IAFF) World Championships in Osaka, Japan, garnering a bronze medal in the dash.

Since then she has been training with John Smith, who coached 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist and former World 100 record holder Maurice Green.  Jeter will now look to the USA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. as a spot to the IAAF World Championships in Berlin will be on the line.

Jeter was a standout Toro in her four years in Carson, Calif. with a total of five All-America awards, peaked by a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash at the 2003 NCAA Championships.
Over her highly-decorated Toro track career, Jeter established all the all-time sprint marks, holding the school records in the outdoor 100 (11.43) and 200 (23.65), as well as the indoor 55 (7.04), 60 (7.50) and 200 (24.56).
