Toros Split With Tritons in Tale of Two Games

Carson, CA -- Senior leadership paved the way in the opening game of the four-game set against UC San Diego this afternoon as pitcher Regina Farfan limited the Tritons to just two hits while Liz Vazquez haunted her former team with two hits and the game's lone RBI in CSUDH's 1-0 win, but the Tritons replied with a 5-0 blanking of CSUDH in the nightcap to split the afternoon's contests.

Farfan was dominant in the opener, allowing just one hit through the first six innings of play.  Growing stronger against the aggressive Triton offense, Farfan needed just 18  pitches to retire all nine UCSD batters from the fourth through sixth innings, including three Tritons on the first pitch.

Vazquez garnered two hits on the day, including the lone RBI in the fourth as her double plated Emiley McEwen, who walked on four pitches to begin the frame.

Katie Garcia also tallied two hits in the win, while Farfan needed just 72 pitches in the complete-game win.

The nightcap was a complete 180 for the two teams, as the Tritons' Kristyn Lesovsky greeted Farfan with a home run to lead off the game, after which a double prompted a pitching change for the Toros as UCSD put across two in the inning.

The visitors added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, as Triton pitcher Camille Gaito kept the Toro hitters at bay, allowing just two hits in picking up the split.

Nicole Saari and Jenni Habib each belted two hits in the UCSD shutout, as the Toros were unable to put any runs on the board, despite three Triton errors.

Adding to the "nothing went right" nightcap, NCAA leader Vazquez fanned for the first time this season, halting a string of 141 consecutive at-bats without striking out.

With just a handful of games left in the regular season, tomorrow's twinbill could play a big role in the NCAA West Region rankings as the Tritons, at No. 7, sit one spot ahead of the Toros, with the top eight teams in each of the eight regions qualifying for the NCAA postseason in early May.

Prior to game one, the softball team honored the CSUDH men's and women's basketball and indoor track and field squads for their achievements during their respective seasons, with Aaron Tinsley and Brittney Blankenship throwing out the honorary first pitch.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow at high noon, as the Toros honor three seniors in Vazquez, Farfan and Christine Bathauer in a pre-game ceremony.
