McEwen's Big Offensive Day Salvages Split at CS San Bernardino

San Bernardino, CA -- Freshman Emiley McEwen went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored as the Toros salvaged the nightcap of today's double-header at Cal State San Bernardino in a 9-3 win, after the hosts scored six in the sixth to take a come-from-behind 7-4 win in the opener. With the split, CSUDH moves to 22-12, 12-6 CCAA.

The Toros broke open a 2-1 game in the nightcap with seven runs in the fifth inning on six hits and two Coyotes errors.  Amber Angel belted her second homer of the day and sixth of the season in the frame while McEwen drove in three runs in the inning, clearing the bases with a long single to the base of the centerfield fence.

Regina Farfan (14-7) went four innings to pick up the win, allowing just three hits and one run.  CSUSB starter Brianne Godfredson (0-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in two-plus innings and took the loss.  The seven-running Toros inning was at the expense of CSUSB reliever Cassidy Lee.

McEwen had four hits in five-at bats and drove in four runs to lead the 13-hit Toros attack.

In the opener, junior Stefanie Quinn drilled a grand-slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Coyotes to the come-from-behind 7-4 victory.

Quinn's game-winning blast over the right-field fence came off the Toros starting pitcher Farfan, who had left the game earlier, but returned to the circle in relief of Kaci Carroll to face Quinn with one out and the bases loaded.

Quinn greeted Farfan with her first homer of the season in only her 17th at bat of the season.

The Coyotes trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth with Farfan in control, but after two batters reached base, Carroll replaced Farfan and hit a batter to load the bases, gave up an RBI single and then forced in another run with a walk to make it 4-3.  Farfan came on to face Quinn and she promptly cleared the bases with  her four-run blast.

The grand slam made a winner out of CSUSB pitcher Debbie Shisler (9-6) who went the distance, giving up four runs on 11 hits but only two runs were earned due to a throwing error by the Coyotes.

The Toros went up 1-0 in the second on a solo home run by Angel, her fifth of the season, and added three more in the third inning, two coming on RBI doubles by Khryssi Steele and Farfan with the other run scoring on the Coyotes error.

Farfan went 5.1 innings in total, giving up seven hits and four runs. Carroll (7-4) was tagged for three runs in the sixth to get the loss.

The Toros and Coyotes continue their four-game set tomorrow, with first pitch of the twinbill set for 12 noon.
