Home Runs Lift Toros to 8-0 & 10-8 Sweep of Chico State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Carson, CA -- Breaking a 12-game losing streak to the Wildcats of Chico State, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was led by three home runs from Brian Sturgis, Jon Alia and Paul-Michael Klingsberg in today's 8-0 and 10-8 sweep of the Wildcats of Chico State.

In game one, Carlos Leyva advanced to second on a passed ball after an infield hit, eventually crossing home plate on a Kevin Pillar sacrifice fly to give the Toros a 1-0 lead.

Two more runs in the second would give CSUDH a 3-0 lead going into the sixth, setting up what would be a powerhouse inning. With two runners on, Sturgis blasted a 3-1 count pitch deep over the left fence for his first home run of the 2009 season giving CSUDH a 6-0 lead.

CSUDH grabbed two more runs for an 8-0 lead to snap a 12-game losing streak to the 'Cats, going back to 2006.

Game two featured much more action as the Toros put two runs on the board in both the second and third innings, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a commanding 8-1 lead into the sixth.

Not ready to shut down their hitting on the day, both Alia and Klingsberg connected for back-to-back homers to raise CSUDH's lead to 10-2 in that frame.

Chico, however, had other plans in the seventh as they took advantage of two Toro errors and a Josh Meagher home run en route to six runs and a 10-8 CSUDH lead. With Kody Kurowski on the mound in relief and the bases loaded, a final swing and a miss gave the Toros their second win of the day and Kurowski his first save of the 2009 season.

Leading offensively was Leyva who went 5-8 with an RBI and three runs, with Candelario Flores chipping in a 3-for-5 effort with two doubles and three RBI while both Alia's and Klingsberg's homers would round out the Toro offense.

Matt Hopps and Michael Cruz grabbed wins on the hill with Hopps seeing action for six innings in game one with three strikeouts after allowing only two hits. Cruz went for 4.2 innings in game two and fanned four of his batters after allowing only three hits.

Overall the Toros belted 27 total hits and allowed the 'Cats 13 of their own. On the pitching side they fanned 12 Wildcats while fanning only six times themselves.

Now with a 15-13 record (10-9 CCAA), the Toros will close out the four-game series with a single game set for tomorrow at 11:00am as weather permits. Please check back at www.GoToros.com for updates on the game.
