Toros Split on Final Day of Best of the West Tournament

CSUDH defeats Davis & Elkins, 7-1, after falling 1-0 to Sonoma State

vs. SSU    vs. D&E

Turlock, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills allowed one run in each of its two games today, taking a 7-1 win over Davis & Elkins after dropping a 1-0 pitcher's duel to Sonoma State earlier.  With the split, the Toros start the season at 2-2.  True Freshman Emiley McEwen enjoyed another big day at the plate, while redshirt freshman Wendy Espindola (pictured) picked up the first win of her college career.

Against D&E, the Toros scored early and often with two in the 1st and single runs in each of the next three innings to take control of the contest.  Three D&E errors contributed to CSUDH's two 1st inning runs, before a Katie Garcia RBI double in the second, a McEwen homer in the third and a Jennifer Frazier RBI single in the fourth gave CSUDH starter Wendy Espindola all the runs she would need.

Espindola scattered 7 hits and fanned 4 against just 2 walks in picking up the first win in her college career with Garcia and Katie Jordan leading the offense with two hits apiece.

In the early game, CSUDH and Sonoma State engaged in an old-fashioned pitching duel in their match-up, and it was the Seawolves who prevailed in a 1-0 decision on a two-out RBI single.  Freshman McEwen paced CSUDH with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.

CSUDH starter Regina Farfan held SSU hitless through the first five innings, before a leadoff single by Janelle Arnold and a two-out RBI baseknock by Jessica Abelia accounted for the two Seawolf hits on the day, and the game's lone run.

The Toros collected one hit in four of the first five innings, but stranded eight in that stretch, including the bases loaded in the 4th.

SSU's pitching duo of Brittany Reynolds and Lindsay Emmel combined for the shutout, with Farfan and McEwen garnering two hits apiece for the Toros in the loss.

The Toros open their home schedule on Wednesday, February 11, as Montana State Billings visits Toro Diamond.
