Farfan and McEwen Lead Toros to Season Opening 4-2 Win Over CWU

CSUDH falls to Montana State Billings in its late game

vs. CWU    vs. MSUB

Turlock, CA - Experience and youth combined to lead the Toros to a 4-2 win over Central Washington University on day two of the Best of the West Tournament, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus, the first actual day of competition after yesterday's opening session was cancelled due to rain and field conditions.

Senior hurler Regina Farfan tossed a complete game with 5 strikeouts against no walks while true freshman Emiley McEwen belted the first home run of her college career in enjoying a 2-for-2 outing and 3 RBI.

The game was scoreless until CSUDH's 5th-inning at-bat when a Liz Vazquez walk set the table for McEwen, who homered to bring in Jessica Marlow, who pinch-ran for Vazquez.  The Toros added two more in the 6th after Jennifer Frazier drove home speedster Khyrssi Steele, who singled to begin the frame, after which McEwen drove home her third run of the game with an RBI single to score Frazier, who advaned to second on a ground out.

That was enough for Farfan, who limited the Wildcats to just five hits and two unearned runs in the 6th to record a complete game victory.  Farfan faced 27 batters, inducing 14 ground outs in the process.

Katie Garcia belted 2 hits in her debut as the leadoff hitter in the win.

With only an approximate break of 20 minutes between games, CSUDH fell to Montana State Billings, 3-2, in the late game to end day two with a 1-1 record.

Both teams scored their two runs in the first two innings, with the Yellowjackets tacking on their third and eventual game-winner in the 5th frame.

Kaci Carroll got the starting nod for the Toros, allowing all three runs on eight hits, with Farfan tossing the final two innings.

Frazier went 2-for-4 with Carroll and McEwen tallying the RBIs for CSUDH.

CSUDH will continue the third and final day of the Best of the West Tournament tomorrow with contests vs. Sonoma State and Davis & Elkins.
