Toros Earn Hard-Fought 61-58 Win Over UC San Diego

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Preparing for the ball control approach for which visiting UC San Diego is known, Cal State Dominguez Hills survived a last second attempt by the Tritons in taking a hard-fought 61-58 win on Friday night, bringing the NCAA West's No. 2 seed to 16-5 overall, 10-4 CCAA.  Senior Jerrell Smith led the Toros with 14 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

The visitors started strong, taking a 9-4 lead with just under five minutes elapsed on a Brett Stuckey bucket.  Led by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Tim McGrath, CSUDH cut the lead to two before tying for the second of eight overall ties in the first half.  Michael Hernandez connected for 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field in the first period, aided by eight from McGrath as CSUDH took a 34-29 lead heading into the locker room.

The Toros pushed their lead to nine at 41-32 at the 16:46 mark on a Rodney Yearby dunk, before a Jordan Lawley triple and two AJ Maulhardt baskets trimmed the lead to just two at 41-39.

Two Smith flushes gave CSUDH breathing room at 45-39, before two Triton treys knotted the game for the ninth time at 45-45.

James Cawthorne answered with his own three, before the two teams found themselves tied at 52 apiece at the 5:29 mark, the 10th tie of the contest.

An ensuing CSUDH turnover allowed Lawley to give UCSD its first lead at the 4:22 mark, its first advantage since 5:07 left in the first half.  Jonathan Toliver, however, had other ideas, sinking a long trey 23 seconds later for a 1-point Toro edge.

Two Smith foul shots and another Toliver triple pushed CSUDH ahead by 6 at 60-54, before a Shane Poppen bucket and two Lawley foul shots trimmed the Toro lead to 60-58 with just 83 ticks left in the game.

Usually dependable, Hernandez missed the back end of a 1-and-1 with 21 seconds left, giving possession back to the Tritons down by three.

UCSD had one final attempt with five seconds left, but a Lawley hoist from the corner went for naught, giving the Toros the 61-58 victory.

Hernandez finished with 12 points and 5 assists after his 22-point outburst in yesterday's thriller over CSULA, going a near-perfect 4-for-5 from the foul line.

Lawley led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Alan Husted chipped in with 10 in the loss.

The Toros, now 16-5, 10-4 CCAA, resume CCAA Conference play on the road next weekend at CS Monterey Bay and San Francisco State, before returning home the weekend of February 20-21 to close out their regular season schedule.
