No. 18 Toros Trump Tritons in CCAA Semifinal Penalty Kick Shootout Thriller

TURLOCK, Calif. -- It took two overtime periods and then some, but after #Paige Peel#'s conversion to begin the penalty kick shootout and a missed shot by UC San Diego's Anne Wethe on the Tritons' first attempt, the Toros converted the final four penalty kicks to punch their ticket to Sunday's CCAA Tournament title game against the top-seeded Cal State L.A., a 1-0 winner over Chico State in the other semifinal.

Only taking four shots as a team in the first half, Peel made sure CSUDH's final shot of the half counted, floating a free kick from 35 yards out over Triton keeper Kristin Armtstrong for the game's first goal at 34:03.

In contrast to CSUDH's four shots and one corner in the first, the Tritons kept a more aggressive offense with five shots and four corners, finally seeing their aggression paying dividends 19 minutes after Peel's blast as UCSD's Jessica Wi collected a Shelby Wong deflection to knot the game at 1-1.

The Toros refused to go down without a fight in the final 45 minutes of regulation with both #Jessica Murphy and Karina Jahn# sending strikes toward the net in the 68 and 70th minutes, with both shots sailing wide.

With less than 30 seconds on the clock in the second overtime, an up-close-and-personal #Britney Vance# header from inside of the box came within inches of the frame, sending the southern California foes into a penalty kick shootout for a ticket to the CCAA Title game.

All five of CSUDH's shooters in Peel, #Makenzie Pedrotti#, #Brooke Thompson#, Jahn and Murphy found the net, with Murphy's score sealing the deal after the first Triton shooter sailed her shot high, advancing the Toros to Sunday morning's championship match.

Out-shooting the Toros by an advantage of 13-10, the Tritons made four attempts on goal while allowing the Toros only two.

"San Diego definitely had more of the possession, but we fought through it and through overtime and stuck the PKs in," said a relieved Joe Flanagan on the game.

Toro keeper #Alyssa Congdon# made 3 saves on the day against a hungry Triton offense after UCSD fell 2-1 in overtime at home to the Toros in the CCAA regular season finale, earning praise from Flanagan.

"Our defense played very well in the win today.  Alyssa did a great job in goal and defended very well the whole game."

The contest marked the fifth time Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego met in the CCAA Championship and the Tritons hold a 3-2 advantage. Both of the Toros wins have come in the semifinals while San Diego defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in the championship match in 2003, 2005 and 2008.

With the semifinal officially ending the day in a tie, the Toros now carry a 13-7-1 overall mark going into Sunday's championship game against their cross-town rival.  Kickoff for the crown is set at 11:30 am.
