Franco Fantastic as No. 9 Golden Eagles Win CCAA Title 4-0

TURLOCK, Calif. – Coming into action having split the two regular season contests, top-seeded and No. 9 ranked Cal State L.A. proved it was the better team on this day after taking a convincing 4-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills to claim the 2009 CCAA Championship.

The victory marked the first CCAA title for Cal State L.A. (17-2-2), which earns the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The 32-team field will be announced on Monday.

The Toros controlled the action in the start, peppering the Eagle defense with four shots in the first 15 minutes, including two sent in from #Brooke Thompson#, who with #Paige Peel# were the lone Toros named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.

A wild header in the sixth minute of play from Thompson, following a #Jessica Murphy# cross, was the closest the Toros would come to score in all 90 minutes of regulation.

The Golden Eagles received the first break of the contest when Ann Marie Tangorra was fouled in the box and Liz Franco converted a penalty kick that gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 28:38 mark.

Franco, the CCAA's regular-season Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Year, made it 2-0 when she received a cross from Jasmin Stuemper and slipped a shot into the far left corner of the goal from the top right of the box at the 49:49 mark.

The Cal State L.A. junior completed the hat trick when she took a loose ball in front of the net following a shot from Gabbi Segall and scored at the 68:15 mark.

The Golden Eagles completed the scoring in the 73rd minute as Alex Conley took a feed from Franco to bring the score to 4-0, the game's final tally.

In the end the Eagles 22 shots far outweighed the Toros' six, lending to the scoring advantage.

“L.A. played very well and they wanted it more,” responded head coach Joe Flanagan following the loss.

“Every ball they went for, first ball, second ball and we weren't ready for that level of intensity."

If the Toros (13-8-1) and Falcons are in the same sub-regional, CSUDH would play on Thursday and Saturday, or most likely on Friday and Sunday if SPU and the Toros are not paired up.

Looking to regionals and the possibility of taking on the Golden Eagles for the fourth time this season, Flanagan knows now what his team needs to do.

“We need to bring hard work and be able to pass the ball. We need that intensity and be able to pass the ball to be successful from here out."
