CARSON, Calif. -- Offense was at a premium for Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first half of its home season-opener after scoring just 20 points, resulting in a 67-57 loss to visiting Grand Canyon on a warm Tuesday night in the Torodome.  Newcomer Tim McLaurin led the Toros with 17 points on the night.

Senior Tim McGrath's lay-up to open the scoring started the Toros off on the right foot, but the Antelopes reeled off a 16-6 run over the next 11 minutes of play to seize control of the game at 16-8.  GCU's lead increased to double-figures on a Steven Morin lay-in to increase its lead to 18-8, where it hovered until the two teams entered the break with CSUDH trailing 31-20.

Spurred by two foul shots by James Cawthorne, a McLaurin jumper and a McGrath lay-up, the Toros creeped back to within 33-30 at the 14:35 mark of the second half, before the 'Lopes long-range attempts started finding the bottom of the net.

After a John Staats trey kept the Toros in striking distance at 41-37, GCU used a foul shot, a 3-pointer and 15-foot jumper to push its lead back to 10 at 47-37 with 8:46 left to go, using three-consecutive threes by TJ Benson, Marco Ramos and Benson again over a minute and a half stretch to push the lead to 17 at 56-39 with just under 5 minutes left in the game.

CSUDH whittled away bit by bit, but could only get its deficit down to 10 twice before the final 67-56 tally.

Cawthorne added nine points and McGrath eight, while GCU's Nick Witherill paced all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe as the Antelopes picked up their first win of the 2009-10 season.

As a team, the Lopes connected for 51.2% of their shots from the floor and 50.0% of their threes, compared to CSUDH's 40.4% from the floor and 31.3% from long range.

CSUDH heads for Utah for a 7:30 pm contest at Dixie State on Saturday, November 21 for game one of a four-game road trip, before hosting the same Dixie State for a return match-up on Saturday, December 12, with first tip set for 5:00 pm in the Torodome.
