Toros Back on Track With 62-52 Win Over Cal State San Bernardino

San Bernardino, CA -- Besting the host Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino in nearly every category, the West Region's 5th seeded Toros were on fire tonight as they improved their record to 12-6 (7-4 CCAA) with a powerful 62-52 win tonight. Once again capturing her title as team MVP was Neka Mixon who tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals to guide to Toros to the win. Being there in the clutch, Ashley Johnson tallied 7 points and 6 boards.

Grabbing a fierce lead early and holding on for nearly all of the first half was due to Johnson who came out firing and put two on the board for the Toros only 40 seconds into the contest. Climbing to a five-point lead, the Toros felt some pressure at 15:37 left in play when the Coyotes were able to grab a two-point lead after Jaclyn Rainville completed a shot from beyond the arc.

However, Mixon then responded from the charity line to recapture the lead and start a movement that would build the lead to a high of 14 points, also off the hands of a Johnson jumper, who took a fast break off her own defensive rebound.

Guided by Mixon and Johnson in the final minutes, CSUDH entered the break with a healthy 13-point lead after a seven-point streak.

Coming out in the second still on fire, the Toros had no problem increasing their lead to a vast 16-points as a quick succession of layups from Whitney Gantt, MacKenzie Mathias and Brittney Blankenship put them at a score of 48-30.

CSUSB had nothing to respond with as Blankenship connected on a jumper to give CSUDH a 19-point lead, their biggest of the night, ten minutes later.

Though attempting a comeback, led by CSUSB''s Krystal Urzua, who led on the night with 20 points, and Shannon Gholar, two final free throws closed out the night for the Toros with a final score of 62-52.

Ultimately it was the Toros 44.6% shooting, out-besting the Coyotes at 33.3%, which gave them the win. CSUDH grabbed 41 boards to CSUSB's 28 to keep the ball in their hands throughout the night.

Leading the way for the Toros was Mixon, who hot off her CCAA Player of the Week award, grabbed another double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals for good measure. Close behind was Blankenship with an additional 12 points and five assists while Barbara Houston gave in 7 points and 8 boards.

Now 12-6 (7-4 CCAA), the Toros will travel to Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow night to face off against the host Broncos with tip-off set at 5:30pm.
