CSUDH Wins Second Straight in 73-61 Win Over CS Monterey Bay

Carson, CA -- Sophomore Neka Mixon tallied a team-best 15 points to lead four Toros in double-figure scoring in a 73-61 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night in the Torodome.  With the win, CSUDH's second-consecutive, the Toros move to 8-5, 3-3 CCAA.  Junior Barbara Houston (pictured) scored 10 points and pulled down 8 boards, just two away from another double-double.

Ultimately, another standout performance from Houston boosted the Toros to a quick lead, as she rallied them to 13-5, five minutes into the first. The Otters' Helen Suarez changed momentum of the game immediately following to knock the Toros lead down to three at 14-11, the closest they would come the remainder of the game.

Houston and Mixon again rallied the bench to bounce back and quickly increase CSUDH's lead into the double-digits.

CSUDH saw it lead increase to 16 prior to the half as a shot from inside the paint from Brittney Blankenship, who took the feed from MacKenzie Mathias took the score to 37-21.

Following the break it would be a quick pass from Houston to Ashley Johnson, who took the jump shot, that brought CSUDH to a 20-point lead at 41-21.

A Mixon jumper with 8:56 left in the second again saw CSUDH 20-up, at which point the Otters mounted a minor comeback.

A too-late in the game foul gave CSUMB the opportunity to decrease the deficit to 9 points at 70-61 as Dana Andrews made both free throws. However Johnson and Mixon finished out Toro scoring to end the game in their favor at 73-61.

Leading the oppressive offense was Mixon with 15 points and 2 assists. Joining her in double-digit scoring was Blankenship and Whitney Gantt (11), and Houston (10). Houston also contributed the most from the boards with eight rebounds. Five assists from Aujanee Baldwin rounded out the Toro effort.

Now 8-5 (3-3 CCAA), CSUDH with travel to Chico State next Friday and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday as CCAA action continues.
