Arcata, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills' season came to an end this morning in an 8-1 loss to top-seeded and host Humboldt State as Jack All-American Lizzy Prescott shut down the Toros on just two hits, fanning seven against just two walks. CSUDH ends its year at 30-25, the seventh time in the last eight seasons the Toros have notched at least 30 wins.
With the 8-1 win, HSU advances to take on unbeaten Western Oregon, a team that could wrap up the title with a win. If the Lumberjacks were to prevail, they'd face the Wolves again at 11 a.m. Sunday to determine the regional title.
The hosts unleashed a 13-hit attack on three Toros' pitchers, saddling starter Regina Farfan with the loss and ending her season with a 17-11 record.
HSU took advantage of two CSUDH errors to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning, then added a single run in the sixth when Ashley Oltjenbruns doubled and scored on Chrissy Motzny's single.
The pair combined for more production in the seventh inning, with Oltjenbruns clubbing a two-out, three-run homer and Motzny making it back-to-back with a solo shot over the right field fence. Nikki Ketteringham had started the rally with a double, then came home on Marissa Slattery's single as the Jacks put up five runs total in the inning.
Prescott (42-11) didn't allow a hit until Kristin Tanaka's fifth-inning single, which was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Tanaka to take second. A sacrifice bunt and ground out by Jennifer Tellez followed, accounting for the Toros' only run as Khryssi Steele returned to the game and crossed home plate.
"Lizzy was pretty much in control and in command today, and that was pretty much the difference," says CSUDH head coach Jim Maier of the game's outcome.
"But I thought, as a young team, we overachieved," he continues. "Getting to regionals was our goal, and we got there. And to be one of three teams to be left standing is just great for our group of kids and our program, and this experience can only help us next year."
Freshman Steele and sophomore Katie Garcia were named to the NCAA Division II West All-Region Tournament team for their efforts.
