Toros Sweep Sonoma State, But Mathematically Eliminated From CCAA Postseason

CSUDH very much still in contention for NCAA berth in two weeks

Jennifer Frazier went 3-for-7 with an RBI in the Toro sweep
Game 1    Game 2

Rohnert Park, CA – The pitching duo of junior Regina Farfan and freshman Kristin Tanaka came up huge when the Toros needed them most en route to a 3-2 and 2-1 extra-inning sweep of host Sonoma State, but a Cal State San Bernardino game one win at Cal State Stanislaus earlier in the day mathematically eliminated CSUDH from the upcoming CCAA Tournament.  The wins, however, which improved the Cardinal & Gold to 26-23, 15-15 CCAA, at least solidifies CSUDH's hold of the NCAA's No. 5 Regional seed as the national playoffs commence on Thursday, May 8.

The opener was scoreless until the 6th when Jennifer Tellez belted a one-out double and advanced to 3B on an error two batters later.  #Jennifer Frazier# then stepped up and promptly put the game's first run on the board with a baseknock, giving Farfan her first lead of the day.

CSUDH added two more in the 7th as Katie Jordan earned a bases-loaded walk and Tanaka singled in a run for a 3-0 lead, only to see the Seawolves reply with two runs on a Shyrle Hawes 2RBI double, putting the tying run on 2B.

Farfan, however, regained her focus and induced Nicole Frieberg to ground to third for the game's final out, picking up her 14th win (14-9) while scattering three hits and allowing two runs.

Game two looked to be a carbon copy of the opener, although the hosts took a quick 1-0 lead in the 3rd on two hits and a suicide squeeze.

The Toros, however, tied the game at 1-1 in the 4th on a Christine Bathauer RBI single that plated clean-up hitter Katie Garcia, who powered a triple with one out in the frame.

With neither team able to score in regulation, CSUDH sent the heart of its line-up to the plate in the 8th and, after loading the bases again, Jessica Marlow delivered with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Garcia with the game-winner.

Tanaka, who got stronger as the game progressed, fanned six against no walks and retired the final 12 Seawolves she faced to improve to 8-5, including the final three in the 8th as CSUDH won its first back-to-back CCAA road games this season.

The two teams conclude the series and the regular season tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 noon at Seawolf Field.
